Good things come in sustainable packages

August 06, 2019

We all know that it’s what’s on the inside that counts, but when it comes to packaging, spare a thought for the 11 million tonnes of packaging waste that we produce in the UK - Every. Single. Year. Yikes.

This statistic has troubled us somewhat because of course, we send our pieces to you packaged in boxes.

Now, as a brand founded on sustainability and ethical production, it’s our job to make sure our packaging is as environmentally friendly as possible - until the day comes of course when we can wrap each piece in compostable hemp ;) So we’ve made a few changes.

Here are some steps that we’ve taken to make our packaging sustainable, reusable, and more friendly to the planet.

  1. We’re used FSC certified paper. That means that the trees harvested are replaced or allowed to regenerate naturally.
  2. We’ve removed everything that render traditional jewellery boxes to be non-recyclable - like foil logos, box hinges and lamination.
  3. We’ve made our mailing boxes resealable and therefore reusable – so you can use it yourself to send other packages. Pay it forward.
  4. We’ve made it pink. Ok, that has no sustainable properties, but we wanted to mention it because damn it looks good.

And we’re not stopping there.

We understand that you might not need a jewellery box with every purchase – you might prefer to display your jewellery, or hopefully you love it so much that you never take it off… So we’re working on making organic cotton bags instead of jewellery boxes, so you have the option of either at checkout.

We still haven't found an alternative to foam inserts, which are important because they protect the pieces we send, but are unfortunately non-recyclable. Any saavy Edge of Ember customers out there know of sustainable alternatives? Let us know!
