Your September birthstone – the story behind the sapphire

September 01, 2020

September babies – congratulations on being born in the same month as Beyonce. You've been winning since birth. As a Virgo, you are the zodiac’s most caring sign, and the Libras, you are harmony-driven and organised. We appreciate you.

Your birthstone - the regal sapphire – symbolises loyalty, nobility, sincerity, and integrity. It’s all going well so far.

The story of the sapphire is one that keeps evolving. In ancient lore, Persians believed that the earth rested on a giant sapphire that made the sky blue, whilst Ancient Hebrews believed that the Ten Commandments were engraved on tablets of sapphire, and early Christian kings espoused their protective powers and wore sapphire-encrusted rings. The tales go on and on. Our favourite OF COURSE, is the modern fairy-tale of the Duchess of Cambridge receiving a 12-carat sapphire engagement ring from Prince William – once belonging to his mother, Princess Diana.

Far less romantic, but of equal importance is the fact that sapphires are among the most durable natural element ever discovered, in fact the only other natural element that can scratch a sapphire is a diamond.

This durability is exploited in many areas, no least technology, like the Apple Watch that features lab-created sapphire glass in its screen. Shame they never did the same for iPhones…
