Your September birthstone – the story behind the sapphire
Your birthstone is the regal sapphire symbolising loyalty, nobility, sincerity, and integrity. It’s all going well so far.
Where did it all begin, you say? Well, the story of the sapphire is one that keeps evolving. In ancient lore, Persians believed that the earth rested on a giant sapphire that made the sky blue, while Ancient Hebrews believed that the Ten Commandments were engraved on tablets of sapphire. Early Christian kings espoused their protective powers and wore sapphire-encrusted rings. The tales go on and on.
Our favourite, though, HAS to be the modern fairy-tale of the Duchess of Cambridge receiving a 12-carat sapphire engagement ring from Prince William – once belonging to his mother, Princess Diana.
Far less romantic, but of equal importance is the fact that sapphires are among the most durable natural element ever discovered. In fact, the only other natural element that can scratch a sapphire is a diamond.
This durability is exploited in many areas, including technology, like the Apple Watch that features lab-created sapphire glass in its screen. Shame they never did the same for iPhones…
Mainly, we love the sapphire for it's blue beauty. It sits effortlessly cradled in gold or silver in our September birthstone collection, looking striking on it's own or levelling up any layering stack instantly. Our current favourite combo? You just can't beat a nameplate necklace, everyday chain, and this timeless sapphire pendant together.
Do you really need any more excuses to celebrate you? We're pretty sure you've earned it, after all. Or perhaps you're here searching for the perfect gift for your September-born someone. Well, look no further.
